Trade Union Project Worker for the PCS Union

The Climate Solidarity Project is a major partnership with four unions – CWU, PCS, NUT, UCU - and COIN. It aims to extend awareness of climate change and encourage social change for a sustainable and just society. It will build on and deepen the impact of the work that has already been carried out in workplaces - but be based within the community.

The project will be working with a primary audience of nearly one million trade union members and a secondary audience of the entire trade union movement.

Climate Solidarity aims to create Action Groups of TU members following presentations given by rank and file members (‘Presenters’) on climate change and its relevance to Trade Unions. However, unusually, the Action Groups will work in the community rather than the workplace.

The Action Groups will have a ‘basket’ of sustainable activities to choose from with targets to be achieved in the six month life of the Action Group. These targets cover a range of options from collectively switching to Green Electricity tariffs and insulating the homes of members to supporting local food consumption. The partnership hopes to create a wave of action on climate change across the whole TU movement and aims to provoke a shift of awareness in the movement spilling over into the progressive movement as a whole.

It is closely connected to the TUC’s Greening the Workplace programme and also builds on the carbon emissions reduction action being taken in workplaces across the country by trade union members.

There is a large team designing and managing this project including: COIN staff from the environmental, trade union and progressive sectors; academic support from the Open University, Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute and Sussex University; and experts across the world who will be drawing on the substantial bank of tested theory in communication and engagement.

Could be based in Oxford but alternative locations are also possible. Job share applications (including from applicants in different parts of country) or applications from those wishing to work only four days per week (as opposed to full five days) will also be considered. This post is a 21 month contract.

COIN is looking for an experienced project manager to run this exciting new project, Climate Solidarity. The successful candidate will have experience in project management, budget control, staff management and liaising with other organisations to achieve the goals of the project. S/he will be highly adaptable and able to work in several different milieu with ease – environmental, progressive and trade union.

S/he will be at once meticulous about the details of the project management while also able to grasp the breadth of the ambitious aims of the project.

The full time salary is £30,000 pa with 28 days holiday per year.

Project Worker for the PCS union
21 month contract for an experienced trade union campaigner to work with PCS members.

Could be based in Oxford but alternative locations are also possible. Applications from people in regions outside of London (the base of most of the unions concerned) or Oxford (COIN’s base) are encouraged. Job share applications (including from applicants in different parts of the country) will also be considered. The first 9 months, as the project builds up, is for 3 days per week rising to 5 days per week in the second year.

COIN is looking for an experienced rank and file activist with a good knowledge of the Trade Union movement or the environmental movement. The successful candidates will have experience of working as a representative at branch or workplace level or as an environmental mobiliser. They will have a track record of successful mobilisation skills and experience within the Trade Union movement. They will have the ability to manage a complex project engaging members in sustainable action within the community. They will have had experience of organising meetings and events. The successful candidate will have very good interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire members to action.

The salary is £26,000 per year /pro rata/ with 28 days holiday per year /pro rata./
